When E-Mail becomes Snail Mail

Tonight I was on the mac doing random things when I get an email.  I have dashboard widgets that alert me when a new email comes in, so I’m always on top of things.  I’m that guy who has an Inbox with 0 unread emails.  Everything is nicely sorted, tagged, and color coded.  Yep, that guy.

So tonight, I notice this new mail message is from 5 days ago.  Shocked and astonished, I opened the email.  Sure enough, it was for a Facebook gift that was sent to me roughly 5 days ago.  Hmm.. So why did it take 5 days to pop up in my Inbox?  I looked at the headers for the answer:

Snail Mail!

Minus a little blurring to protect my friend’s identity, the screenshot isn’t doctored.  You can notice it was sent on Thursday April the 10th, but not received by Gmail until Monday April the 14th.  Hmm.. So what causes email to become slower than snail mail?  I mean there’s no post office it can get lost in, no disgruntle government employees, and definitely no trucks with flat tires.  Just for good measure, it wasn’t a national holiday.  Any ideas?

Overall, I’m impressed by this little email.  He fought and fought to stay home with his friends.  Good job buddy!  Maybe I won’t delete it to remind me of how slow the world used to be.  Then again, maybe not.
